HELLO from Montgomery Alabama. I’m starting the new year with a pilgrimage, of sorts, to the Legacy Sites of Montgomery. A friend of mine, who made this trek five years ago advised that I “READ EVERYTHING” which is great and challenging advice! I wandered through the Freedom Monument Sculpture Park yesterday. The artwork is breathtaking. What I had not anticipated was the immersive nature of the experience. As visitors walk through, read, look and inwardly digest the awful historical facts, the reverent silence and sounds of nature are broken up by the sounds of train whistles and giant trains rolling near the site. An audible reminder and connection to the human trafficking that was made so much more efficient when train travel was added to the equation. It brought me up short – and then reminded me that slave labor, enslaved people built the train tracks and cleared the train routes that advanced the evil commerce.
I’ll share photos – and encourage you to read up about these legacy sites. They are beautifully and heartbreakingly curated. The care and attention to detail of the historical facts and the visitor experience makes a powerful and emotional intersection.
Next on my itinerary are the Legacy Museum, the powerful National Memorial for Peace and Justice and (hopefully) a visit to the Rosa Parks museum/Greyhound Bus museum.
